On Thursday, police executed a search warrant at a residence in the 2800 block of 16 Avenue S.E. where they located 52-year-old Lawrence Orubor, believed to be the leader of “The Family,” and another individual whom Orubor had conditions not to be with.
Orubor had $3,690 cash at the time of the arrest.
He is facing multiple trafficking charges, among others related to assault, material benefit from sexual services and breach of a release order. Orubor appeared in provincial court Tuesday, where his bail on his drug-related charges was revoked.
A date for him to reapply for his release on those charges and the new allegations will be set Friday.
At Crown prosecutor Vicki Faulkner’s request, Judge Paul Mason granted a publication ban on the identities of the two alleged victims in the human trafficking charges.
Orubor, who appeared via telephone from the Calgary Remand Centre, did not address court during the brief proceeding.
There are also warrants out of Calgary for 38-year-old Shakir Jamal for trafficking, advertising sex services and assault with a weapon. He is also wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for parole violation.
Jamal is described as approximately 5’8″ tall and 125 pounds with short black hair that is balding. He has a tattoo on his right cheek that reads “Family,” said police.

“Bringing the accused to justice is only one small part of the success of this investigation. Ultimately our biggest success is in connecting many vulnerable victims with our social serving partners to provide support, resources and a way out,” said Gach.
“Stopping the cycle of victimization from people who seek to profit from drug trafficking takes a wrap-around community approach and we could not do it without our partners.”
Faulkner said once Jamal is arrested she will join up his charges with Orubor’s.
