The Cave

When Martha Ross and her collaborators introduced The Cave to audiences in 2019, they did something few other theatre companies were doing. They filmed the production.
“One of the first things we thought of was to live stream at least one of the shows,” Ross said. “We wanted people outside of Toronto to see it. One of the exciting things about this project was that we were able to hire this amazing team of producers and technicians and designers and directors. We had one trial night, and then we did it for real.”
Now, of course, everyone’s doing it — filming their productions, that is. But thanks to their pre-COVID efforts, Ross’s company J Mar Electric has a nice tidy package it can offer to venues like the Cultch.
People tuning into the stream of The Cave will see “an apocalyptic cabaret about animal refugees and the climate crisis,” in the theatre’s words. In the show, several animals on the run from wildfires, take refuge in a cave. The cave, which happens to be home to Bear, becomes a nightclub as the animals — including Bear, Moose, Beaver, Skunk, Snake, Wolfe, Crow, and Fox — sing their blues.
