There seems to be a lot of controversy surrounding the issue of masks and individual “rights” to wear or not wear them.
Well, we who do wear them have rights too, so when the rights of those who choose not to wear a mask are imposed on those who choose to wear masks then I have an issue.
The situation is not about rights, but about protection. We all have the obligation to protect ourselves, our families, friends, neighbours, etc., but also those we do not know. This is a global pandemic, not a local one.
There are laws in place for those who choose not to obey the speed limit, those who drive impaired and those who do not wear seat belts. If these laws can be obeyed, why not the law enacted to protect us all by wearing masks?
I live in a seniors’ apartment where we are obligated to wear masks in common areas, such as the lobby, where sitting areas are roped off to prevent gatherings, elevators, the laundry room and hallways. Most tenants comply with these mandates as they want to protect the other tenants in the building.
