The pandemic isn’t the only culprit: social media, and the “adventure tourism” trend, fuelled by platforms such as Instagram, plays a role.
“In 2014, we had 90 to 100 calls, and that number has drastically gone up. In 2018, we had 144. Last year was our busiest year to date, with 151 calls,” said Danks.
12 a.m. – Outbreaks at Surrey pre-trial and care homes in Prince Rupert and Strathcona
There were 500 cases of COVID-19 reported over the past day and 14 deaths.
In a prepared statement, provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said there were 4,345 active cases of the disease in B.C., of which 320 were being treated in hospital including 66 in intensive care. The number in intensive care had fallen.
Henry said there were two new outbreaks at the Villa Cathay Care Home in Strathcona and the Acropolis Manor in Prince Rupert. Outbreaks were declared over at the Guildford Seniors Centre, Maple Ridge Senior Village, Mountainview Village in Kelowna (where 16 people got sick and two residents died) and Village by the Station care facility in Penticton (where ten people got sick and one resident died.)
There has also been another community outbreak at the Surrey Pretrial Services Centre, where prisoners are held before trails, and some others are housed.
