And soon travellers entering Canada, with very few exceptions, will have to reserve a room in a government-approved hotel, at their expense, for three days and take a COVID-19 test, also at their own expense.
If they test negative, they will be allowed to finish their 14-day quarantine at home, with authorities checking in on them to ensure they respect the rules. The government is hiring private security firms to help with the checks.
Those who test positive will be forced to quarantine in a public health centre designated by the government to ensure they do not spread the virus.
Trudeau did not specify when these measures would take effect, but a statement issued by Transport Canada later said “as soon as possible in the coming weeks.”
