Myanmar politician detained by military as army seizes control of the country
Boris Johnson has joined other world leaders in calling for the immediate release of Myanmar’s leader Aung San Suu Kyi, after she and other senior officials of the ruling party were detained by the military in a coup on Monday morning.
The coup comes after the ruling NLD party won a landslide victory in elections last November, and as politicians gathered in the capital for the start of the new parliament session.
An army-backed political party performed badly in the election, after which military officials claimed voting irregularities. In recent days senior generals had refused to rule out seizing power if the alleged voter fraud was not investigated.
Mr Johnson has said that “the vote of the people must be respected and civilian leaders released”.
Tanks and soldiers have been seen on the streets of major cities and internet services and phone lines have been shut down in some areas. The main state TV channel said it had stopped broadcasting due to “communication issues”.
A military-run TV channel was the first to announce the coup, saying the military would take charge for an emergency period of one year and that new elections would be held.
