A Gabriola family is mourning the loss of 22-year-old Amanda Black, who was killed Monday night in Fort St. John.
She is survived by her infant son, Jasper, father Rick, and grandparents Linda and Butch Black.
Black was found dead after police were called to a home on the evening of Feb. 8 in a townhouse complex in the northeastern B.C. town.
Shane Sutherland, 27, was arrested without incident at the scene. He has been charged with second-degree murder and was remanded in custody. His bail hearing Thursday was deferred until March 1.
Linda and Butch Black run the Wheelbarrow Nursery on Gabriola Island, where Rick Black also lives.
The investigation by the RCMP and the B.C. Coroners Service into Amanda Black’s death is continuing.
A GoFundMe has been set up by friends of the Black family to help them cover the costs of legal, funeral and travel expenses, raising more than $10,000 in less than 24 hours.
“We want to help the Black family gain some closure for this huge loss,” says the fundraising page. “With time off work, these mounting expenses will be too much of a burden to handle as the family grieves the loss of beautiful Amanda.”
A memorial page has also been set up on Facebook.
