The week gone by was a hot one for new movie trailers and TV teasers. Streaming will get way more interesting in the coming months, and we’ve got the clips to prove that. Disney has given us our first look at a title dedicated to its legendary character Cruella. Two cult video game franchises — Mortal Kombat and Dota — are getting the streaming treatment. Also, one of your favorite Schitt’s Creek characters is returning to the screen in a very different avatar.
Get a load of all this and more in our trailer roundup for the week.
The best new movie trailers and TV show teasers for upcoming streaming titles
Disney’s Cruella
Emma Stone is brilliant, bad, and a little bit mad in Disney’s Cruella. Yes, Disney is resurrecting the puppy-hating, chain-smoking character we all loved to hate in the 1996 film 101 Dalmatians. Stone looks every bit as mental (if not more) in the role as did her predecessor Glenn Close. The new movie trailer currently teases a May 28 theatrical release, but there’s a high chance that the film could end up on Disney Plus around the same time. Here’s hoping that it does become available for streaming early, just like many other Disney originals this year.
DOTA: Dragon’s Blood
Netflix is making an animated adaptation of the cult video game Dota and we got a date announcement trailer for it this week. The clip introduces us to Dragon Knight Davion, a melee hero that players might recall from Dota 2. His dragon blood is the source of his strength in the game and it’s what gives the series its name. Eight episodes of DOTA: Dragon’s Blood will start streaming on March 25.
Biggie: Got a Story to Tell
From having to sell drugs on a corner to becoming one of the biggest, raddest rappers ever, Netflix has given us a new trailer for its documentary on Christopher Wallace aka Biggie Smalls aka The Notorious B.I.G. The film traces the artist extraordinaire’s origin story and releases just before what would have been his 50th birthday.
Playing With Power: The Nintendo Story
Crackle, the ad-supported free streaming service, has released a new trailer for its original docuseries on Nintendo. It traces the company’s story from selling trading cards in the 80s to the gaming giant it has become today. If you’re a gamer fanboy, this one could be an interesting watch and the best part is it’ll be free to stream.
Kevin Can F**k Himself
Haven’t seen Annie Murphy from Schitt’s Creek for some time? Well, you’re about to get a good dose in this dark comedy headed to AMC Plus. The trailer shows Murphy switching between a perfect housewife and a scorned woman who wants to kill her husband. The show is rife with the 80’s sitcom vibe, complete with canned laughter. At the same time, it’s got a more modern, shadowy feel typical of an AMC crime drama.
Mortal Kombat
Warner Bros. released a restricted new movie trailer for Mortal Kombat this week, giving us our first look at the video game’s latest live-action adaptation. The action-packed clip introduces many fan-favorite characters from the game such as Sub-Zero, Kano, Raiden, and Liu Kang. The film is one of those from Warner’s roster that’ll directly hit HBO Max for streaming on April 16.
Mare of Easttown
Starring Kate Winslet, Guy Pearce, Jean Smart, and Evan Peters, Mare of Easttown is a crime thriller coming to HBO Max in April. The trailer for the seven-part series shows Winslet at the titular Mare, a small-town detective investigating a local murder as life around her crumbles. HBO describes the show as “an exploration into the dark side of a close community and an authentic examination of how family and past tragedies can define our present.” We’re definitely interested. Are you?
