The Dutch parliament’s upper house approved late Friday legislation to keep its nighttime curfew in place until at least March 3, in order to comply with a court ruling that the measure lacked legal justification.
The government is pushing the emergency legislation through parliament, which it believes will give the measure, meant to curb the spread of the coronavirus, legal footing. On Thursday, the lower house of parliament already gave its backing to the bill, which officially enters into force this weekend.
The rush to pass the emergency bill follows Tuesday’s lower court ruling in which judges said that the curfew was not legal because it was based on a law designed to only be used at time of national emergency, such as a dike breach.
The government immediately appealed, which resulted in a decision for the curfew remain in place until the appeals court makes a decision.
The appellate court was due to announce its verdict on February 26, but the emergency legislation has made the court’s decision irrelevant.
The curfew is valid until the morning of March 3. On Tuesday, the cabinet will announce whether or not to extend it.
