Gaming monitors can sometimes be about sacrifice. You may have to choose speed over performance or vice-versa. However, the ViewSonic Elite XG270QG strikes a balance between both. With its 165Hz refresh rate, it hits the sweet spot standing out as the all-rounded choice for gaming enthusiasts and binge watchers.
Design and I/O
With the ViewSonic Elite XG270QG, you find an all black design with RGB lights in various sections. There is a hexagonal ring of RGB lighting near the monitor’s mount area, where you also find support for a VESA or double use as a headphone rest. There are two more RGB lights at the bottom of the display, which can be controlled independently from the rear ring.
The lighting in question can be configured in various ways. You could opt for static lights or pulsing lights, showing off various colours found in a rainbow. The RGB strips can also be controlled via different programs. There is support for Razer’s Chroma, which we used as well as Thermaltake’s RGB Plus or Cooler Master’s MasterPlus+ to tune your setup’s look.
For its base, the display comes with an all metal arm allowing free movement of the monitor. You can swivel its 45 degrees to the left or right, tilt between -5 and 20 degrees or pivot 90 degrees for a portrait view. Moreover, you can adjust the height of the monitor to your liking and setup too.
Accompanying this is a rather ordinary 2W speaker alongside an array of ports. You find one HDMI 2.0 port and one DisplayPort 1.4b coupled with three Type-A USB 3.0 ports, one Type-B USB port, a 3.5 mm headphone jack pass-through and the power input. While their bottom placement is great for cable management, we would have liked to see a few ports on the monitor’s sides for easier accessibility.
Speaking of the rear, it completes the user experience. You find two flexible mouse bungees next to the RGB strips. These are great to raise your wired mouse’s cable off the desk surface and out of your way. In most use cases, they also work better than your regular mouse bungee, thanks to the monitor’s 7.7 kg weight to hold things in place. For more serious gaming, the monitor also comes with side panels for added privacy.
Display performance
The 27-inch panel on the ViewSonic Elite XG270QG is a 2,560 x 1,440 resolution one with a thin bezel design. It being an IPS panel and offering a high 165Hz refresh rate is one of the stand-out features about the monitor. In terms of the screen’s raw performance, you are looking at a 98 per-cent DCI-P3 coverage rating and a 100 per-cent sRGB coverage rating. On top of this, you find support for 1ms response times thanks to the Nano IPS panel, which tends to work well at up to 144Hz.
Whether you play single-player or multiplayer titles, you are sure to notice an improvement to visuals. Often times, a high refresh rate means muddy and washed-out colours however it was nice to see the opposite here. We saw vibrant colours and strong contrast. Some may say that the drop in performance seen above 144Hz is a deal breaker but we do not think so. More often than not, a gaming title’s optimal play frame rate falls below 144 frames per second (FPS) so this hardly matters.
Jumping into the settings, you have a variety of modes to configure your experience. We often used ‘Web’ mode for daily usage however for gaming, using the ‘FPS’ or ‘Battle Royale’ mode came in handy. Each mode adjusts the look of the display slightly for better fine tuning. Of course, you can also manually adjust settings such as brightness, contrast, saturation and colour temperature according to your preferences.
We think for both FPS titles and richer games such as Spiderman: Miles Morales, this display is great. Without making sacrifices in performance, it is able to deliver some breathtaking visuals. You can use it with your computer setup or console setup alike and we are sure it will not disappoint.
Conclusion
It does not get any better than the ViewSonic Elite XG270QG if you are in the market for a gaming display without sacrifices. The one drawback with it though may be price. Compared to many high refresh rate options available in the market, the ViewSonic Elite XG270QG is expensive. But given how well it performs not just when gaming but also when watching multimedia content, the added investment may be worth it in the long run.
