Montreal’s first property tax payment, scheduled for March 1, has been postponed to June 1, the city is reminding taxpayers.
Homeowners and businesses are getting the three-month respite because of the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The second payment, which is usually due on June 1, has been postponed to Sept. 1.
“The arrival of vaccines gives us hope for happier months in the medium term. In the meantime, the situation continues to be difficult for many Montreal owners and merchants,” Mayor Valérie Plante said in a statement.
“These postponements demand a major effort from the city of Montreal, but they seem necessary to us given the pandemic prevailing in the metropolis and the slower recovery of our economy,” she added.
Benoît Dorais, the chairman of the city’s executive committee, announced the tax postponement Jan. 13.
