Tehran on Sunday rejected an EU invitation to attend an informal summit to discuss reviving the Iran nuclear deal.
“Time isn’t ripe for the proposed informal meeting,” Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh tweeted.
The comment came after Enrique Mora, the deputy secretary general of the European External Action Service, last month proposed informal talks on reviving the Iran deal, which the administration of U.S. President Joe Biden said it would accept.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump withdrew from the so-called Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in 2018 and reimposed sanctions on Iran, which retaliated by rolling back compliance with its obligations under the pact.
Now, Washington and Tehran are deadlocked over a return to the deal, with Tehran saying the U.S. should first lift all sanctions reimposed by Trump, while Washington insists Iran should comply with its commitments first.
“While we are disappointed at Iran’s response, we remain ready to reengage in meaningful diplomacy to achieve a mutual return to compliance with JCPOA commitments,” a senior Biden administration official told NBC News, adding that the U.S. would consult with the five permanent U.N. Security Council members and Germany on the matter.
