Pelosi Claims Americans ‘Overwhelmingly’ Support Democrats’ Gun Control Bill

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) spoke out on Thursday morning to claim that Americans “overwhelmingly” support Democrat-sponsored universal background check legislation that was just passed by the House as the left’s latest gun control measure.

Pelosi Discusses Gun Control Bill

Just before the House was set to vote on legislation, H.R. 8, Pelosi spoke out in comments that were aired by CSPAN.

“There is nobody in Congress whose political survival is more important than the survival of our children,” Pelosi said.

“We think this should be bipartisan to Congress, as it is in the country. Overwhelmingly, there is broad support for background checks legislation, so we hope with the big strong bipartisan vote we have today to send it over the Senate, the drumbeat across America, that the change will come,” she added. “This legislation…will save lives.”

Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) spoke out in this same press conference to say, “Background checks is supported by 90 percent of Americans.”

House Passes Bill

The House ended up passing the legislation after Pelosi’s remarks, according to WABI. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said afterwards that the Republican “legislative graveyard is over” and that the legislation to require background checks on all firearms sales will have a vote in the Senate.

“A vote is what we need,” Schumer said. “Maybe we’ll get the votes. And if we don’t, we’ll come together as a caucus and figure it out how we are going to get this done. But we have to get it done.”

President Joe Biden has called on Congress to expand gun control laws, saying in a speech last month that this needs to be done immediately.

“We owe it to all those we’ve lost and to all those left behind to grieve to make a change,” Biden said as he marked the anniversary of the Parkland school shooting in Florida that killed 17 people. “The time to act is now.”

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin (D-IL) said earlier in the week that the committee plans to have hearings on gun control over the course of the next few weeks.
