Stephen Brown, the editor in chief of POLITICO Europe, died on March 18 in Brussels, at the age of 57. As news of his untimely death was made public, hundreds of journalists and politicians from across Europe, the U.S. and Latin America took to social media to express their shock at the news and their appreciation of the man they knew. Current and former colleagues remembered how he cared about his staff on a personal level, regardless of their seniority.
Before joining POLITICO in 2015, Brown had a long career with Reuters in Latin America and Europe. Tributes to his exceptional character and writing also poured in from former colleagues. Many tweets referred to how much he had helped reporters grow as writers or had seen their potential before they did.
Throughout the years and across organizations, colleagues spoke of a “gentleman-journalist” and someone for whom the excitement of a good story never seemed to fade. Many also mentioned just how unpretentious he was, despite his title and many achievements.
The “big people” noticed him too. Members of every European Union institution, as well as the diplomatic representations of 14 countries, tweeted out their condolences.
