A new home has been found for the dog who miraculously survived the frozen Detroit River last month — and that home is the arms of his rescuer.
On March 26, the River Rouge Animal Shelter in Michigan announced that LaSalle marine company owner Jude Mead Jr. has permanently adopted the small, white, fluffy canine now called Miracle.
Jude Mead Jr. and his father — proprietors of J & J Marine Ltd. in LaSalle — ventured via airboat to the Detroit River’s Mud Island on Feb. 20 to save Miracle after the dog was spotted wandering the ice for several days and nights.
The dog’s tale of endurance and rescue was the subject of international media attention.
“Today, the story came full circle,” stated River Rouge Animal Shelter in a recent Facebook post. “Today, the little Miracle dog was placed into the hands of the hero who saved his life.”
During the month after his rescue, Miracle recovered at Woodhaven Animal Hospital and River Rouge Animal Shelter.

According to the shelter, there were many requests to adopt the dog. Mead was chosen after a “very careful, stringent, and thorough application process.”
Roberto Cruz, chief of the River Rouge Fire Department, travelled across the border to hand-deliver Miracle to Mead in Canada.
“It was decided that the man who saved Miracle was the very best fit for him,” River Rouge Animal Shelter stated. “We are all so grateful for this ‘happily ever after’ ending to this amazing story.”

Miracle was initially named Alfonso at the animal hospital. Questions about his original owner and how he ended up on the ice remain unanswered.
Along with exhaustion and dehydration, Miracle suffered from pancreatitis, hip dysplasia, and frostbitten paws and scrotum due to his ordeal.

The Animal Resource Funding Foundation said many generous donations from the public have covered Miracle’s medical bills thus far: Totaling more than $5,000, as of early March.
“We understand that there could be more bills to come in the future and we are committed to paying those as well,” ARFF stated.
River Rouge Animal Shelter thanked all donors and cheered: “What a lucky boy,”
J & J Marine Ltd. has not responded to requests for comment.
Members of the LaSalle marine community have said the Meads are known for their helpfulness and community spirit.
