A new system of garbage collection got underway Thursday in Laval after the city distributed 130,000 black bins to homes and buildings with seven units or fewer.
The bins will be emptied into trucks using mechanical arms, which means garbage collectors won’t have to lift the bins. That makes collection faster, safer and will help keep the streets cleaner because the new bins can’t be opened by animals and are resistant to wind.
The black bins are to be used for refuse that can’t be recycled or composted, and all of the city’s roughly 445,000 residents are obliged to use them. They can drop off their old garbage cans or bins at three dropoff points April 10 and 11: the Saint-François arena, Berthiaume-Du Tremblay Park and Lucerne arena.
