Alberta’s daily COVID-19 case counts are back over 1,000 after the province logged an “estimated” 1,100 new cases Friday.
It’s the highest number of new infections in Alberta since the start of the third wave, and the most reported in a single day since Jan. 7, during the tail end of the province’s second wave.
The sky-high case count came from about 13,300 tests, resulting in a test positivity rate of approximately 8.3 per cent. That rate is significantly above the seven-day average of 6.3 per cent, and is the highest proportion of tests to return positive since Jan. 4.
An estimated 300 new variants cases were detected, with variants making up 33 per cent of the province’s total active cases. At last update, Alberta had 2,820 active variant cases.
No specifics on deaths, hospitalizations or active cases were provided, as chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw said the Alberta Health reporting team was getting a break during the holiday long weekend.

Hinshaw said Thursday the province aims to provide data to Albertans “in a very transparent way,” saying it’s important to keep people informed about trends.
“I’m very concerned about the numbers, very concerned about the variants, and wanting to make sure Albertans hear that message,” Hinshaw said.
Hospitalizations remain stable, Hinshaw tweeted, but exact numbers were not provided. On Thursday, there were 292 Albertans in hospital with COVID-19, 59 of whom were in intensive-care units. A total of 1,994 deaths from the virus had been recorded.
Hinshaw will next address Albertans Tuesday.
Immunizations also continued Friday. Alberta reported about 15,000 more doses of vaccine had been administered, bringing the total number of jabs to date to about 675,000. Specifics numbers were not provided.
On Thursday, Alberta Premier Jason Kenney said the third wave of the pandemic had arrived in Alberta, but did not add any new public-health restrictions.
More to come.
