Britain will move to the next phase of its plan to lift coronavirus lockdown on April 12, Boris Johnson confirmed.
The U.K. prime minister told a Downing Street press conference Monday that Britain is meeting its “four tests” for lifting COVID-19 restrictions.
It will therefore reopen shops, gyms, zoos, beer gardens, holiday campsites and personal care services such as hairdressers a week from today.
Britain’s four tests include a significant fall in case numbers; manageable capacity in the National Health Service; continued progress with its vaccine rollout; and new COVID-19 variants not fundamentally altering the picture.
Johnson confirmed Britain would also next week be raising the number of visitors permitted to meet loved ones in care homes from one to two.
But he warned the public: “We can’t be complacent. We can see the waves of sickness afflicting other countries. We’ve seen how this story goes. We still don’t know how strong the vaccine shield will be when cases begin to rise, as I’m afraid that they will.”
The U.K. government announced earlier that twice-weekly rapid testing for the coronavirus will be offered to everyone in England starting Friday.
