Prince Philip obituary: The Duke of Edinburgh dies aged 99
Tributes are flooding in for Prince Philip, who has died at the age of 99.
Buckingham Palace confirmed the Duke of Edinburgh’s death at midday on 9 April, weeks after he was treated in hospital for an infection.
Philip – who would have celebrated his 100th birthday in June – spent England’s third coronavirus lockdown with the Queen at Windsor, and in January they both received Covid-19 vaccinations.
Meanwhile, the pandemic is set to have a major impact on the duke’s funeral, codenamed Forth Bridge after the Scottish landmark and Unesco World Heritage Site, as military processions and lying-in-state protocol are abandoned to abide by lockdown restrictions.
A royal commentator said earlier the entire farewell would be “pared back” and largely kept behind the walls of Windsor Castle.
“Clearly [Buckingham Palace] have planned for a Covid funeral and I know that Philip’s would be a pretty understated royal funeral compared to that which would be held for his wife,” Joe Little, managing editor of Majesty magazine, said.
“It will be behind castle walls at Windsor and we won’t get to see much of it at all.”
Ever wondered why Prince Philip wasn’t a king?
A light is being shone on the life and duties of the Duke of Edinburgh in the wake of his death, aged 99, with many in particular wondering why the Prince Consort did not become the King of England when he married the Queen in 1947.
