It isn’t clear whether police are looking for more than one suspect.

There are a lot of kids in the neighborhood. Parents in the area told Layton they were frantic to get their own children away from the windows.
A family member of the injured child told Layton they are all beside themselves, but the child is surrounded by people who love her right now, and at the moment, they are hopeful.
“Right now, she just made it out of surgery. So, for the most part, the bullet went in and went out, but it just tapped her spine. So the immediate effect she’s OK, but we don’t know about long term as of yet,” the victim’s cousin Antuan Austin said. “Right now, we’re blessed she was able to survive it.”
One of the groups that responded to the scene is the Newark Community Street Team. They go to areas of violence to try to stop retaliation before it happens. They also responded to the hospital, trying to comfort the terrified family.
