WHAT A LET DOWN
We have moved into a phase of the pandemic in Ontario where blame for the ongoing disaster must now shift squarely onto the government and public health officials who have for so long lectured the people for our “reckless” and “irresponsible” behaviour. Today, the ‘third wave’ of infections is being driven by the over 2 million Torontonians with no option but to go to work every day in jobs the government has deemed “essential” but has not seen fit to protect with paid sick days or proper workplace monitoring. Meanwhile, in a desperate effort to be seen doing something, officials cast about for other villains, closing everything in sight except for the very places where the virus is spreading. Small retail businesses have been largely shuttered for months, and schools — the closure of which was supposedly “an absolute last resort” for our education minister — have been shut down city-wide despite most having no significant COVID presence. Rather than offering its promised “targeted” approach, our government has once again reached for its trusty sledgehammer and started swinging blindly. And now, after weeks of reassurances that huge shipments of vaccine are flowing in, we get the news that vaccination centres are closing due to shortages in supply. When the pandemic finally ends, an enormous wave of joy and relief will sweep over us all. We cannot let it drown the memory of how completely the elected (and un-elected) officials of this province have let us down.

(Getting vaccines is one of the most important areas everyone wants government to succeed – regardless of political stripe or level. But it will be difficult to forget just how they messed this up)
BASIC COMMON SENSE
Re “Liberal plan for universal basic income ignores huge price tag” (Jake Fuss, April 14): To cut the costs of a Liberal fantasy of universal basic income, might I suggest that every voting Liberal business, union, individual — after all, you got us into this mess — sponsor a family with complete guaranteed income for their lifetime! Let them put their own money, not ours, where their ideas reside. I would imagine down the road it will evolve into limiting the number of children people are allowed (after all, they are polluters and will, in turn, require a basic income) and our time on Earth will be limited as a cost-cutting measure. Let the Justin Trudeau fun and admiration of communist society begin.

(There is little thought out into these programs. They are rooted in emotional and knee-jerk policymaking that will be costly and inefficient)
HEY DOUG, I WANT TO GO SOUTH
Dear Doug Ford, remember when you said you would help people pack because they want to leave Canada? Is there any way you could get me a Green card? I want to move to the U.S.A., to one of the states that have lifted all COVID-19 rules. I would like to be free. Canada is no longer land of the free. I was also so impressed with the health care in the U.S. I have lost all faith in our system. I have witnessed horror stories and not because of the patient burden of COVID-19. I am disgusted with myself that I voted for you.

(We are hearing this a lot. But will it make a difference in the next election?)
