Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla has said he is confident that life in Europe will return to normal in the fall.
Speaking to four European newspapers on Thursday evening, Bourla said COVID-19 will “become like flu. We will be having our vaccinations and we will be living our full lives.”
He also noted that his company would “dramatically increase” deliveries of the BioNTech/Pfizer vaccine to EU member countries in the coming weeks, with 250 million doses for the second quarter in total.
Bourla added that the EU’s rollout — which has faced criticism for lagging behind countries like the United Kingdom and the United States — shouldn’t be compared to quicker vaccination campaigns, saying that “the grass always looks greener in your neighbor’s garden.”
He continued: “If you see the data for Europe, I think it’s not behind other major complex countries. Supplying and administering doses for 447 million people, the EU population in 27 member states, is a monumental task. What I see from our part, it’s working like a well-oiled machine.”
Also on Thursday, Bourla told CNBC that people would likely need a booster shot of his firm’s jab within 12 months of being fully vaccinated and added that it was possible that an annual dose was needed.
