The billions of dollars Ottawa will transfer to Quebec for the new federal child-care program can be spent “without conditions,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Sunday evening.
While on the program Tout le monde en parle, Trudeau said the new national program was inspired by Quebec’s daycare program, adding “it is not the federal government who will tell Quebec how to spend on daycare centres and on families.”
Asked to clarify the absence of conditions, for example if the funds could be used in health, the PM affirmed discussions will take place with the government of Quebec.
“Of course, there is always room for more investment in daycare centres, but we’re not going to say that and certainly not all of it,” Trudeau said.
The national child-care program was announced in Deputy Prime Minister’s Chrystia Freeland’s budget on Monday.
“Of course, it will be unconditional,” Quebec Finance Minister Eric Girard said on Tuesday of the possible transfer valued at $6 billion over the next five years.
