U.K. Defense Secretary Ben Wallace on Monday denied several allegations over Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s conduct in office, telling BBC Radio 4’s Today program that repeating a claim made in the Daily Mail on Johnson’s management of the COVID crisis was “really, deeply unfair.” According to the Daily Mail, which writes the story as coming from “a source,” the prime minister allegedly told colleagues during a meeting in No. 10 in October last year: “No more ****ing lockdowns — let the bodies pile high in their thousands.”
“There’s no source,” Wallace replied on several broadcasts Monday morning, telling Times Radio that “how much space [these claims are] taking up is a matter for the editors of the media.”
Wallace’s comments come amid a dramatic row between Johnson’s government and former aide Dominic Cummings. Last week, the government accused Cummings of being the so-called chatty rat responsible for multiple leaks, notably the one that indicated that the government was planning for another lockdown on October 30, 2020.
Cummings on Friday has denied responsibility in a blog post, claiming that “all the evidence definitely leads” to a special adviser named Henry Newman.
Cummings also alleged that Johnson initially took a loan from a Conservative donor to cover his recent costly refurbishment of the flat above No. 10, Downing Street, which he occupies with his fiancée.
“The prime minister has at all stages complied with the rules,” Wallace said.
