West Ham United intend to appeal the red card picked up by defender Fabian Balbuena during the club’s meeting with Chelsea, according to reports.
Werner makes the difference
The Hammers were of course back in action this past weekend.
Moyes and co. welcomed capital rivals Chelsea to the London Stadium, for a crunch showdown in the Premier League’s top-4 race.
Ahead of kick-off, the two sides were separated only by goal difference, in 4th and 5th respectively.
But, when all was said and done on Saturday, it was Chelsea who bagged an all-important winner, to take control of the Champions League picture with five games to play.
The solitary goal of the derby came late in the first-half, when Ben Chilwell’s inch-perfect delivery from the left was slotted home from close range by Timo Werner:

Appeal incoming
In the aftermath of the capital showdown, however, it was not the eventual result which grabbed the headlines.
Instead, this came in the form of the latest controversial decision stemming from a VAR check.
Ten minutes from time, Fabian Balbuena and Ben Chilwell were involved in a challenge which left the latter grounded.
Upon replays being broadcast, it became clear that this had come as a result of a follow through on Balbuena’s part, but one which, from all angles, looked completely accidental.
Nevertheless, following a brief check of the pitchside monitor, referee Chris Kavanagh came to the conclusion that the West Ham stopper was responsible for an act of serious foul play, resulting in a red card being produced:

In turn, speaking during a post-match interview with Sky Sports, it came as little surprise when David Moyes revealed his anger with the call, going as far as to suggest that Chris Kavanagh has ‘never played the game’.
Nevertheless, it had since remained unclear whether or not West Ham actually intended to appeal the decision.
Such uncertainty, though, has on Monday been put to bed.
As per a host of reports in the English media, the Irons will move forward with an appeal to the Premier League, to have Balbuena’s suspension overturned.
As things stand, the Paraguayan is in line for a 3-game ban.
