Pune city might have reached its peak as it has been witnessing a decline in active Covid cases since the last two weeks. However, the rural area of Pune district is yet to reach its peak with infections continuing to rise with a daily positivity rate of above 30 per cent.
Even as the administration has been seeing some relief from the changing situation in the city, the rural area continues to be a cause of concern. As on May 3, the Pune rural registered an active count of 27,114 cases with 9,065 people being hospitalised and 18,049 in home isolation. The daily positivity rate in the rural part of the district was over 40 per cent a month ago and has been decreasing. However, it remained above 30 per cent.
This has continued to put stress on the hospital infrastructure as patients in critical condition do turn up in the city for treatment.

“Last year, it was noticed that the decline in active patients in rural areas in comparison to city areas was taking place at a gap of 15 days. We hope the same happens this time as the hospital continues to be under pressure,” said an officer from the district administration.
The district administration is taking efforts to contain the spread and bring down the high daily positivity rate, he said adding that even smaller towns are implementing strict lockdown measures.
The administration has declared a strict lockdown in Baramati from Wednesday to contain the ongoing Covid-19 surge. The lockdown would be in place for seven days and only pharmaceutical shops will be allowed to function. Dairy shops will be allowed to open for only two hours in the morning. Meanwhile, the lockdown will have no impact on the industrial units in Baramati.
Rural Pune recorded the maximum number of the total 1,712 deaths due to Covid-19 in the last month. As many as 472 deaths were reported in the month taking the toll to 2,184 on April 30 and further increased to 2,267 on May 3.
Also, the number of infected due to coronavirus has been the maximum in April with 64,697 cases of the total 1,54,707 in rural parts of the district till now, which accounts for around 42 per cent of the total infected so far.
Of the total 97,309 active patients in Pune district, 40,701 are in Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), 21,619 in Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), 6,296 in Municipal Councils and 1,579 in Cantonment area. However, the maximum of hospitalised patients are from the rural areas with 9,065 admitted for treatment followed by 8,955 in PMC and 8,047 in PCMC.
