On his Saturday morning show Velshi, MSNBC host Ali Velshi played fact checker, claiming it’s a “LIE” to say President Biden’s agenda is socialism. Velshi even went so far as to claim a “single payer” health care system that ends private health insurance is not socialist! For many, it’s like Velshi’s riot denial, only this time, as Democrats set capitalism on fire, Velshi stands in front of the fire, saying “this is not an attack on capitalism.”
He began with a quote from Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell: “We’re confronted with severe challenges from a new administration and a narrow majority of Democrats in the House and a 50/50 Senate to turn America into a socialist country and that’s 100 percent of my focus.”
VELSHI: Well that’s 100 percent a lie. In fairness, McConnell has since softened his view about obstruction being 100 percent of his focus, but he still let the cat out of the bag. The GOP is a party with no actual agenda other than to sabotage the current administration. And as an economics guy I’m troubled by the continued false narrative about socialism.
Socialism is a system in which the government owns the means of production, meaning actual ownership of factories, hospitals, even machinery used to produce goods and services that people consume. Biden has not promised nor carried out anything that remotely resembles socialism. Even if you believe, as I do, that America should have a single-payer health care system, something that Biden disagrees with, that’s still not socialism. If you believe student debt should be canceled or that the minimum wage should be $15 an hour or that carbon emissions should be cut, none of that is socialism. What Biden does believe is that the era of big government is back. The idea of government involvement in certain aspects of public policy can be helpful. And guess what? That’s still not socialism!
Speaking of misinformation, Velshi then somehow suggested we hadn’t “boosted vaccine production” until Biden came into office!
Americans are warming up to the idea of more government especially during a once in a generation pandemic when a powerful and effective government could have ensured America had enough PPE, imposed mask mandates, accelerated testing and boosted vaccine production, all things President Biden did once he assumed office. In fact, a recent NBC News poll found 55 percent of Americans say the government should do more to solve the country’s problems.
After complaining about Ronald Reagan saying government is the problem, Velshi concluded that Republicans “lying” about Biden’s socialism is “just weak tea.”
Speaking of “weak tea,” this same Ali Velshi had no shame at all just ten months ago in the Democrat lie that the government under Republicans may define the term “fascist” in its response to unrest in Portland.
Velshi’s lecture for Big Government was brought to you by Liberty Mutual.
