LaSalle Police have charged an 82-year-old Windsor driver after a cyclist was struck Friday afternoon and taken to hospital with serious injuries.
At approximately 4:30 p.m. Friday, a red Chevrolet Cruze was travelling west on Todd Lane and made a left turn onto Canada Street. At the same time, a 59-year-old male from LaSalle was riding his bicycle east on Todd Lane through the intersection when the collision occurred.
According to witnesses, the cyclist tried to turn out to avoid a collision but was struck by the Chevy in the crosswalk on Canada Street. The cyclist was knocked to the ground and pinned under the front of the Chevy. Paramedics and LaSalle Fire Service tended to the cyclist who was transported to hospital with serious injuries. Members of the LaSalle Police Service Technical Collision Investigation Unit and Forensic Unit kept the road closed until approximately 8:30 p.m. to complete their investigation.
The driver of the Chevy was charged with careless driving causing bodily harm and was also issued a three-day driver’s licence suspension for having more than 50 mgs of alcohol per 100 ml of blood.
The extent of the injuries to the cyclist are not known at this time but are not expected to be life-threatening. The investigation into the matter is continuing.
