NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — An NYPD officer is in the hospital Thursday after being shot multiple times in Brooklyn.
Police Commissioner Dermot Shea said it appears the cop was shot in the aftermath of a deadly fight between two gangs late Wednesday night, CBS2’s John Dias reported.

Shea said around 11:11 p.m., there was a report of shots fired near the corner of Madison and Broadway in Bedford-Stuyvesant.
According to Shea, video shows a man ran up to a white SUV at a red light and shot at three men inside. The SUV crashed a shortly after.
Five shell casings were recovered at the scene.
Robert Randall, 28, was killed and Malik Lucas, 21, is in critical condition, according to police. The third man in the SUV was not hurt.
Shea said all three occupants were known to police, have extensive arrest histories and are alleged gang members with open gun cases.

A ShotSpotter alert informed police about the shooting.
About four minutes later, two officers and a sergeant assigned to the 81st Precinct were on patrol in an unmarked car about four or five blocks away. Shea said they were in uniform.
According to police, around 11:15 p.m., the officers and the sergeant saw a man walking “briskly” near Saratoga Park.
When the officers got out of their car to investigate, the man allegedly pulled out a firearm and immediately began to shoot at them. The officers returned fire.

“It’s by the grace of god that we are not about to start planning for a second funeral in one month,” Shea said at an overnight press conference.
“This is an example of extraordinary bravery. Here are our officers, in a situation where they see someone acting suspiciously, and they go and do what we depend on them to do every single day and protect their fellow New Yorkers,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio.
Shea said a preliminary investigation shows one officer fired 12 rounds and the other officer fired nine. The sergeant did not fire his weapon.
The officer, 28, who fired nine rounds was struck three times — once in the vest, once in the leg and once in the buttocks.
He was taken to Kings County Hospital. Shea said he is well and is expected to make a full recovery. The commissioner said the officer’s bulletproof vest likely could’ve saved his live.
The officer is from Nassau County. His brother is also an officer and his father is retired from the NYPD.
The suspect, 26, was shot in the leg and apprehended at the scene. He is in custody at the hospital.
According to Shea, he is a known gang member to the NYPD.
However, Shea said it was not immediately clear if this suspect is the man who shot at the white SUV.
