Benzema back in
Karim Benzema’s return to the French national team ahead of this summer’s Euro 2020 tournament was a shock to many.
The Real Madrid striker had been absent from the squad since 2015 after a sex-tape scandal emerged featuring Benzema and fellow French international Mathieu Valbuena.

However, this appears to be water under the bridge for French manager Didier Dechamps, who has opted to include the Galactico in his 26 man squad for Euro 2020.
And, giving his first interview since his inclusion, Benzema has spoken to L’equipe, revealing how he felt to return to the squad, his relationship with Deschamps, and his club future.
On whether the call up was expected:
“I will not say yes or no. I had hope and I have always had it because I never give up, but even more, I have always been ready to return. I was very attentive in view of my season with Madrid” .
On his talk with Didier Dechamps:
“He explained it to me himself, of course. We talked a lot and said a lot to each other. Things we had to say to each other a long time ago. It was a good talk and there were important things. Today I am on the list, so the The discussion was good. We saw each other. We were face to face, it was not a phone conversation. We had not seen each other since 2015, when I was last summoned. I always got along well with him and after three minutes, everything returned to normal. He said he would take me to the Euros. It was a long discussion between men, what we said will remain between us. We talked about everything: football, life, family … What I got clearly from the talk is that we had given a great step together. “
On playing with Giroud:
“Sure, I saw Giroud against Chelsea. We talked calmly between the two legs. He congratulated me on the goal I scored. The talk was good. I’ve played with him before, it’s going to be similar to how it was before.”
Benzema about Giroud: ‘You can’t confuse an F1 car with a go-kart and I’m being kind.
Giroud’s reply: ‘What am I, a go-kart? A world champion go-kart.’

On Zidane’s support and his future:
“Zizou has always been sincere with me. When I don’t get picked, he is sincere and when I have gone with France, too. I respect him a lot because he is very direct with me. He gives me a lot of confidence on the pitch. For now, Zidane is Real Madrid’s coach. I don’t see him leaving. He won’t leave, you’ll see. If he leaves, he leaves, but for the moment, I don’t see a Madrid without Zidane.”
