San Jose railyard shooting: Multiple fatalities reported, shooter dead

NEW DELHI: Multiple people were reported dead, including the suspect, in a shooting that broke out at a railyard in San Jose, California.
Santa Clara County sheriff’s spokesman deputy Russell Davis said that he cannot specify the number of dead and wounded or describe how the suspect died.
“We have multiple victims and multiple casualties at this point. I can’t confirm an exact number of injuries and fatalities,” said Davis during a press briefing.
The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office confirmed on Twitter that the “shooter is down”.

The shooting took place at a light rail facility that is next door to the sheriff’s department and across a freeway from the airport. The facility is a transit control centre that stores trains and has a maintenance yard.
The victims include Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) employees, Davis said. The VTA provides bus, light rail and other transit services throughout Santa Clara County, the largest in the Bay Area and home to Silicon Valley.
San Jose mayor Sam Liccardo took to Twitter to express his pain at the loss of the victims’ families and mourned the death of VTA workers.

Liccardo further added that a reunification center has been established for families at the County Building at 70 Hedding St., near 1st street.
Governor Gavin Newsom said that his office was “in close contact with local law enforcement and monitoring this situation closely.”
Special agents from the FBI and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were responding to the crime scene, officials said.
