Active shooter at VTA light rail yard, 2 fires burning in San Jose
Several people were killed when a gunman opened fire at a light rail facility on Wednesday in San Jose, California, according to police. The suspected gunman is among the dead, according to San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo.
The shooting occurred during a union meeting at a California light rail yard around 6.30am local time. Santa Clara Sheriff’s deputy Russell Davis was short on details about the shooting, telling reporters that there were “multiple fatalities” and “multiple injuries”.
Mr Davis confirmed the shooter was no longer a threat but did not specify a cause of death for the suspect. He said police would provide another update at around 1.30pm ET.
Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority is in charge of the maintenance facility, which services rail, bus, and shuttle transportation. Rail service will be suspended at noon local time.
Bomb squad at site of house fire
Two bomb squad techs have entered the South San Jose home of the suspected VTA shooter to make sure no explosive devices are inside, according to reports.
The home burned this morning in a suspicious fire.
A gas can and hundreds of rounds of ammo found were reportedly found inside.

Multiple reports have identified the alleged suspect as a VTA employee. This was confirmed by officials.
He shot himself after killing eight others.
The bomb squad is now at the VTA building following up on reports of explosive devices inside.

Report: Eight fatalities
Law enforcement sources have told The LA Times there were eight fatalities.
The suspect is said to be a 50-year-old male, who set his own house on fire, then drove to the Valley Transportation Authority union meeting and began shooting, the sources said. He then killed himself.
Multiple weapons and ammunition were reportedly found inside his home.
Law enforcement sources say that early indications are that the shooting was related to a workplace issue.

Two transported to hospital, one died in transit
A spokesperson for Valley Medical Center confirms that two male victims were brought to the hospital.
One was dead on arrival. The other is in critical condition.

KTVU reports a firefighter as saying that a house fire reported at about the same time as the shooting may have been at the alleged gunman’s property. The shooter has still not been named.
