Severe thunderstorm, extreme heat warnings issued for Montreal area

Environment Canada warns conditions could lead to strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain.

Environment Canada is warning about the possibility of severe thunderstorms Saturday and extreme heat in Montreal over the next few days.

The agency issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the island of Montreal Saturday morning, saying the current conditions could lead to strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain.

“Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes,” the agency’s alert says. “Water-related activities may be unsafe due to violent and sudden gusts of wind over bodies of water.”

A special weather statement is also in effect for the next couple of days, warning of an upcoming heat wave that will be felt in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil and the Châteauguay —La Prairie area.

“From Sunday to Tuesday, daytime highs will reach or exceed 30 degrees Celsius and humidex values could reach 40,” the statement reads. “Nights will also be hot, with lows near 20 degrees Celsius.”

To combat the heat, Environment Canada suggests drinking six to eight glasses of water per day, spending at least two hours in a cool place and limiting physical activity.
