A tornado has been spotted east of High River, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada.
An Alberta Emergency Alert was issued for the tornado just past 2 p.m. Saturday. The tornado was spotted just east of High River moving to the east at 25 kilometres per hour, the alert said.
The community of Blackie is in the path of the tornado, according to the alert.
Those in the area are advised to take shelter in a basement or reinforced structure, staying away from windows, door and outside walls. Those on a highway who can not reach shelter are advised to take shelter in a ditch or ravine.
The extreme weather comes amid thunderstorm watches in effect in Calgary and much of Southern Alberta.
Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the Calgary as of 10:30 a.m.
The city could see large hail, strong winds and torrential rainfall.
A thunderstorm watch is issued when conditions are favourable for storms. A stronger warning could be issued if weather radar suggests a storm will pass over the area.
Environment Canada says the conditions will be favourable for storms until late this evening.
