An update on the future of Manchester United and Spain goalkeeper David de Gea has emerged recently.
Who is Man United’s no.1?
David de Gea had stood as Manchester United’s unchallenged no.1 goalkeeper for many years.
However, the Spaniard’s displays over the last few seasons have not always been up to par.
At the same time, Dean Henderson played out two campaigns on loan at Sheffield United were he proved himself to be a top-quality keeper, especially in 2019/20 when his exploits played a key role in the Blades securing a top-half finish on their return to the PL.
So, when Henderson returned to Old Trafford, some fans were no doubt hoping to see the young Englishman handed a chance to displace de Gea as Man United’s no.1.
And, that did happen to some extent in the second half of 2020/21.
Henderson would be handed the odd start in the domestic cup competitions early on. But it was not until mid-March of this year, when de Gea flew back to Spain to have a baby, when Henderson really began to be handed a chance.
The Englishman would start eight league games in a row between March 3rd and May 9th.
De Gea in the dark
However, de Gea would begin to reclaim his place somewhat and started in the Europa League final, which went to penalties and saw the Spaniard lose the tie for his club.
Regardless, United finished the campaign with it still quite unclear who their no.1 was.
The 24-year-old does look to have a bright future and United fans probably don’t want to lose him.
But de Gea has at least another two years on his deal and is believed to be on over £300,000-a-week. And that sort of sum will likely make it hard to both use him as a back-up keeper and try to sell him on, especially in a post-covid market.
De Gea, for his part, is said to be still in the dark about his Manchester United future, according to ESPN.
ESPN add that, at present, de Gea has yet to be informed by Solskjaer about the plans for Man United’s goalkeepers next season and, as things stand, the Spaniard intends to return to Old Trafford after the Euros to fight for his place.
