Boxing Day and January sales: predictions
The Boxing Day and January sales bring with them a final shot at picking up some of the year’s hottest tech at a discount. From TVs and laptops to fitness trackers and headphones, you’re sure to find a massive range of savings available at the end of the year.
So if you don’t think you’ve got that perfect present under the tree, there’s another way to make sure you end the year with some new gadgets, and that’s all before we see the massive furniture sales of January as well.
As usual, there will be a lot of offers to sort though. So to make your life easier, we’ll be rounding up all the very best deals in the Boxing Day sales – and, later, in the January sales – right here as soon as they drop. We advise you to bookmark this page and check back from as early as 21 December. After all, Boxing Day deals have appeared up to a week early in the past, and given that this year has been like no other, it’s best to be prepared.
In the meantime, we’ll run you through everything you need to know about both the Boxing Day and January sales. From exactly when we expect the offers to start, to which retailers are likely to have the best deals in the Boxing Day and January sales, and which products we think will have the biggest discounts, we’ve got you covered.
First though, for anyone who can’t wait for the Boxing Day sales, here are the best sales happening now…
The best deals ahead of the Boxing Day sales
Boxing Day sales 2020: when will they start?
Excellent question, and while you might assume that the Boxing Day sales will launch on Boxing Day – that is, 26 December – we’ve seen some retailers start their Boxing Day and January sales as early as the week before Christmas in the past.
This is a trend we expect to see continuing online this year. We’ve seen it happening already: after all, in November, lots of UK retailers launched their Black Friday sales early. The likes of Amazon and Currys assured shoppers that prices wouldn’t fall again further on the day – but if they did, people would be refunded the difference.
So while officially, online, most Boxing Day sales will be starting at midnight, 26 December, we expect to see plenty of early Boxing Day deals dropping in the days before. As soon as they start, you’ll be able to find the best ones here on this page.
Will the High Street be open for Boxing Day sales?
At this stage, we don’t know yet whether shops will be opening their doors for the Boxing Day and January sales. While many stores have opened again since the UK’s most recent lockdown ended, there’s currently little opening hour information for Boxing Day and 1 January available yet, and of course no one knows for sure how the pandemic will affect things.
Certainly, we advise shopping online if you can, rather than trawling through the Boxing Day and January sales in person. We expect to all the same deals online as would be in store – and indeed more than ever this year.
When will the Boxing Day sales end – and the January sales begin?
This will vary from retailer to retailer. While some switch their Boxing Day sales into early January sales from the 27 December, others extend their Boxing Day deals right to the end of the month. Largely, though, you’ll find it’s the same offers, just packaged under a different name.
Who will have the best Boxing Day and January sales in 2020/2021?
All the big retailers get stuck in to the Boxing Day and January sales. Here’s a run-down of the big hitters, with our predictions for what you’ll be able to grab from each.
The Amazon Boxing Day and January sales are a great place to start. Amazon has been on a discounting rampage since mid-October and it certainly won’t be slowing down any time soon – you can expect the deals to keep rolling in well into January.

Currys impressed us with its Boxing Day and January sales last year, and more recently on Black Friday. This year we’re expecting big discounts on TVs, laptops, gaming consoles, Dyson cordless vacuum cleaners, kitchen electricals and more – keep an eye out for the TV ads showing off the best ones too.

Very.co.uk has been a regular on our deals pages throughout the year and we expect it to have tempting Boxing Day deals on TVs, laptops and consoles once again along with other gadgets. Very is also a top fashion, home and beauty item retailer too so expect a wide gamut of deals.

AO is one of our go-to retailers when we’re scouring the net for cheap TV deals or laptop deals all year round. AO really specialises in home electrics though and it’s a fantastic time of year to upgrade with a new fridge, freezer, washing machine, kettle, microwave and the like.

Once a little sales-shy, John Lewis is starting to embrace the winter sales period, and we saw some outstanding deals on speakers, appliances, and TVs over Black Friday. Why buy from John Lewis? Well, it offers a two year guarantee on a huge selection of items (five years on TVs) at no extra charge, which is great for peace of mind when buying electrical items.

Argos is one of those retailers that always seems to be having a sale, so you can be sure to find a bargain in the Boxing Day sales, and again in January. Annoyingly, much of its stock is region-based, but you can check availability by entering your postcode before going through the checkout process. Discounted prices on laptops, TVs, toys and console bundles are still well worth a look.

CDKeys.com is one of the cheapest places on the net for PC games all year round and offer fantastic prices followed by instant delivery of the code, with major platforms like Steam, uPlay, Origins and Battlenet supported. It’s not all about the PC crowd though as CDKeys have some of the best deals going on PS Plus and Xbox Live Gold memberships too.

Mobiles.co.uk is taking advantage of the growing trend to buy and upgrade phone contracts online rather than on the high street. We saw some great mobile phone deals on Black Friday so you can expect more of the same from this trusted mobile phone seller – and we’ve seen a couple of great iPhone / Samsung Galaxy deals this year if you’re thinking of an upgrade.

Carphone Warehouse is an established high street retailer and is also one of the best online phone retailers now. We’ll pick out the best mobile phone deals, whether they’re standalone smartphones, contract phones, voucher codes or whatever else looks like a great mobile deal to us.

Last year’s best Boxing Day and January sales
There were plenty of bargains to grab in the Boxing Day and January sales last year. To give you a flavour of what to expect in the next few weeks, here’s a glimpse of the best deals from the most recent Boxing Day and January sales…
Boxing Day sales: TV deals
TVs have been big business in 2020, and the discounts show it. Over Black Friday we saw some excellent prices on the latest models, all offering new apps like Disney+ and plenty of smart home features and colour improvements. Sales prices on these newer releases have been mirroring what we saw with last year’s iterations, but we’ve seen more premium QLED technology available on more budget sets over the course of the last few months as well.
As well as Samsung, Hisense’s QLED displays have been dropping their prices a little faster this year, which means you’ll likely find some significant discounts in the upcoming Boxing Day sales. Plus, if you’re just after a good old LED 4K display, you’ll get better value for your money this year as 2020 models take the place of the older versions you’ll find from last year’s offers below.
LG 43UM7000PLA 4K TV: £349 £279 at Currys
This budget 43-inch LG TV dropped back to its Black Friday price in the January sales last year. We’ve seen newer models sitting at this price point so far in 2020 as well, so you’ll get better features for your cash this time around.
Philips Ambilight 43-inch 4K Smart TV: £850 £488 at Amazon
Philips Ambilight TVs had an excellent year last time the January sales rolled around. The LED lighting fixed to the back of the display casts the colours from your shows and games onto the wall behind the set for a truly immersive experience, and you could even grab Dolby Vision and Atmos in here as well. Since then, we’ve seen the newer 2020 models sitting at around this price as well so you’ll find some excellent deals this year.
Panasonic TX-65FX560B 4K TV: £679.99 £545 at Amazon
Larger TVs have also seen better price drops than this Amazon offer from last year. In 2020 we’ve seen 75-inch models dropping cheaper than this, and Panasonic’s TX range has been the subject of some stunning discounts in the last few months as well. That means signs are pointing to even more cash off more premium displays like this in 2020.
Samsung The Frame 43-inch QLED TV: £999 £699 at John Lewis
This Samsung The Frame TV was £300 off in John Lewis’s January sales last year. We’ve seen similar prices on the 2020 model so far this year, but discounts haven’t been as forthcoming. The regular QLED Q60 and Q80 models, however, have been tumbling over the past few months so you might want to turn your attention there in 2020.
LG 55-inch B9 OLED TV (2019): £1,799.99 £1,079 at Amazon
We’re now into the X generation of LG OLED TVs, and we’re seeing prices settling at similar sales positions as this so far. Over Black Friday, the BX was available for this price and the CX for just £100 more. That means you can expect more of these discounts later in the month, and even better features for your cash as well.
Boxing Day sales: Computing and laptop deals
Laptop deals have slowed a little towards the end of 2020, after the early months of the pandemic wiped cheaper models off the shelves and increasing demand meant that retailers were reluctant to shave too much cash off more budget machines. However, there have still been some excellent offers over the course of the year, and with updated components under the hood you’re getting better value for your cash in 2020 as well.
Last year we saw an i5 machine with 8GB RAM, a 512GB SSD, and 32GB of Intel Optane memory going for just £499. That’s a stunning laptop deal and if you spot something similar in 2020’s Boxing Day sales we’d jump on it because we’ve only seen very few sales hitting this level of value over the course of the year.
HP Pavilion 14-inch laptop: £649 £499 at Currys
You could grab this fantastic 14-inch laptop with a massive 512GB SSD for under £500 at Currys in last year’s January sales. With an amazing 10th generation i5 processor under the hood with an 8GB of RAM as well as 32GB of Intel Optane memory to boot, this offer was an absolute steal last year.
HP Pavilion 24 all-in-one Windows PC: £799 £599 at Currys
Send your productivity through the roof with this 23.8-inch all-in-one Windows PC from HP – oodles of screen space to get your work done (or for watching Netflix), plus speedy internals and 1TB of storage space. £200 off in the early January sales wasn’t to be sniffed at either.
Asus VivoBook X5 15.6-inch laptop: £469 £369 at Amazon
The VivoBook offers a full HD, almost bezel-less screen and a lightweight form factor. Last year you could get a speedy 256GB SSD with an i3 processor and 4GB of RAM – specs perfectly suited for storing media files and light multitasking – for just £369.
Boxing Day sales: Headphone and audio deals
We’ve seen some excellent headphone deals so far this year, and with the Boxing Day and January sales approaching, we may well see some of the best prices returning shortly.
The industry leading Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones did see a slight price drop over Black Friday this year, but it was the previous generation that really shone in 2020. Last year prices dropped down to £239 in the Boxing Day sales, but we’ve already seen those costs sit closer to £209 at their cheapest 2020 positions.
Similarly, the most popular true wireless earbuds currently available have also seen some significant price cuts since Christmas last year. The AirPods Pro buds were only a few months old by the Boxing Day sales all those months ago so didn’t see too much cash shaved off. However, we’ve already seen costs dropping to just £199, and for most of the year as well, so keep your eyes on Amazon and Laptops Direct for more.
In the worlds of mid-range Beats, Bose, and Sony headphones we’ve seen prices on the Beats Studio 3 and Bose QuietComfort 35 II far outperforming last year as well. With the Beats dropping down to just £149 in 2020 and more wireless noise cancelling cups getting even cheaper, those searching in the lower end of the budget should have plenty to choose from in 2020.
Last year’s headphone deals in the Boxing Day sales
Apple AirPods (2019) with Charging Case: £159 £124.97 at Laptops Direct
The latest model (second generation) of AirPods were just under £125, cheaper than the Black Friday prices we saw. Since then we haven’t seen much movement on this sales price, even over Black Friday, but that discounted cost has been the norm all year round.
Beats Studio 3 wireless noise-cancelling headphones: £299 £199 at Currys
The Beats Studio 3 headphones dropped to £199 in the Boxing Day sales last year, however considering these cups were available for £50 less than that sales price and the cheaper Solo 3 headphones were down to £125 over Black Friday, we’re expecting an improvement even on this in 2020.
Sony WH-1000 XM3 noise cancelling headphones: £239 at John Lewis
These were our favourite noise-cancelling headphones (and they had been for two years running), so grabbing them at a discount with a two year guarantee from John Lewis made this an excellent January sales win. Not only that, but we’ve seen prices drop an extra £30 lower so far in 2020.
