As Mariah Carey’s longtime makeup artist, Kristofer Buckle helps the Queen of Christmas look flawless year-round, and has earned a front-row glimpse at her style secrets along the way.
“I’ve watched Mariah take scissors and cut a designer beaded gown into a mini dress while it was on her … because that’s what she wanted to wear,” he told Page Six Style.
“I’ve learned [from her] that your style is yours.”
Buckle, whose celebrity clients also include Blake Lively and Kelly Ripa, has known Carey since 1994 and spent many holidays with her across the globe.
“One of my favorite Christmas memories was when Mariah took us on a midnight horse-driven sleigh ride through the woods in Aspen,” he recalled. “We were all cozy under heavy wool blankets, and Mariah made sure there was hot cocoa as we made our way under the moon through the snow.”
When they’re not on sleigh rides together, Buckle and Carey are slaying the beauty game.
“Mariah is a living legend, so I always keep familiar shape themes on her eyes and play with slight color and texture differences,” Buckle told us.
And while his superstar client has experimented with a variety of show-stopping looks, there’s one makeup classic you’ll never see her wearing: red lipstick.
“Red lips are a holiday staple, but not for Mariah,” Buckle revealed. “She prefers to play up her eyes with strong eye shapes and soft lashes.”
In “Mariah Carey’s Magical Christmas Special,” now on Apple TV+, the legendary singer is summoned by Santa to boost holiday spirit. As she spreads Christmas cheer, she wears a series of festive styles ranging from short, sexy dresses to glamorous gowns.
“I usually let the costume or dress dictate how I’ll approach the look,” Buckle explained. “For the Christmas special, there is definitely variety, and some of my favorite looks I’ve created for her.”
For those hoping to add some festive sparkle to their own holiday looks, he suggests starting with skin.
“Adding a dewy glow to skin, especially during a time of year when it can be drier, is always a great place to begin,” the makeup maestro said, pointing to his own Kristofer Buckle Light Enhancing Highlighting Duo ($26). “[It] gives the option of a cream and a powder in the same compact.”

And if the cold air leaves your complexion resembling Rudolph’s nose, Buckle recommends a trick he learned from Mariah herself: “Use an ice milk compress to reduce skin redness.”
Taking cues from the diva’s eyes-first beauty approach could prove particularly useful in an era of face masks. However, if you can’t live without your bold lip color, Buckle advises “using a long-wearing formula that sets completely” to avoid smearing.
“A beautiful festive primary red lip and a lashed eye that’s swept with a sheer metallic gold shadow is an easy way to be holiday perfect,” he added.
But whatever beauty look you choose, remember that the best accessory is some Carey-level confidence.
“No explanations, no apologies. Wear what makes you feel good,” Buckle said.
