A Calgary Police Service officer was killed on New Year’s Eve when he was hit by the driver of a vehicle fleeing a traffic stop in the northeast community of Falconridge.
The unidentified officer, 37-year-old Sgt. Andrew Harnett, had stopped a vehicle in the area of Falconridge Boulevard and Falconridge Drive at about 10:50 p.m. when the driver sped off, striking him.
The desperate efforts of nearby officers and paramedics were unsuccessful and Harnett succumbed to his injuries around an hour later in hospital, Calgary Police said in a statement Friday morning.
“The profound grief this has brought to all members of the Calgary Police Service and their families is unmeasurable. Please bear with us while we work through this difficult time,” the statement reads.
Harnett joined the service 12 years ago after serving as a military police officer, said police. He was promoted to Sergeant in 2019 and serving District 5.
