In mid-January, Grace McCann, past-president of both the Ontario Ladies Golf Association and Canadian Ladies Golf Association, died after a three-year battle with neurosarcoidosis, a rare neurological disorder. She was 85.
“We called her Mrs. Canada,” said friend Sue Demers.
In early February, former long-time teacher, coach and referee Sam Sasso died suddenly at the age of 70 while playing senior volleyball at St. Clair College.
Sasso, along with his brother Randy, coached the Windsor AKO Fratmen junior men’s basketball to six consecutive national titles in the 1970s. The Windsor AKO junior men’s teams from 1974 to 1979 were inducted into the Windsor/Essex County Sports Hall of Fame in 2017.
On Feb. 21, Robert (Bob) Tapak, former chief of Tecumseh Fire Rescue Service, died at the age of 77. His firefighting career spanned more than four decades, including 30 years with Windsor’s fire department. Tapak had a lead role responding to the catastrophic 87-vehicle collision on Highway 401 in 1999.
On March 8, Tom Wilson, who served as a Windsor city councillor for 21 years, died at 76 after struggling with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Wilson, a retired teacher, served on city council for seven terms over more than two decades until his retirement from politics in 2006.
“Tom was an institution when I was elected to council in 2006,” said Mayor Drew Dilkens. “He will be deeply missed.”
On March 26, Sam Sisco, a 2009 inductee into the Windsor/Essex County Sports Hall of Fame in the builders’ category, died after a battle with cancer at the age of 85. He was a long-time hockey coach and teacher at Herman Secondary School, but was most remembered for his efforts over six decades with officiating.
