“There is no doubt about our commitment to the rule of law and to an open, fair and equitable international system. The fact that we accepted the award by the UNCLOS Tribunal regarding our maritime boundary with Bangladesh is a testament to this fact. Our successive tenures in the Security Council have clearly brought out the fact that we do not shy away from standing up for these principles and speaking out for the common interests of developing countries as a whole. We will continue to approach our tenure with the same perspective,” Tirumurti informed ET from New York on Friday.
This might be seen as a delicate message to China which has made efforts over the previous couple of years to subvert rules-based worldwide order by means of instruments like BRI and CPEC to additional its strategic ambitions.
India may also utilise its UNSC stint to marketing campaign for a united entrance towards terror, not simply by UNSC however by all the UN and urge the worldwide physique to struggle the brand new avenues of terror, Tirurmurti mentioned. “During Covid, Pakistan has only enhanced its support to cross-border terror in spite of the call by the UN Secretary-General for universal ceasefire. In fact, they have tried to paint themselves as a victim of terror.”
He recalled that 9/11 was definitely a turning level in the best way the worldwide group checked out terrorism and the UN Security Council unanimously adopted the Resolution 1373 in 2001. “Individual fight against terrorism became a common fight. However, terrorists have found more and more ingenious ways of committing terror. In recent years, their capability has been enhanced by use of technology, including drones, artificial intelligence, etc. Social media networks are being used for radicalisation. Financing of terrorism continues to be a major issue. Democracies have become particularly vulnerable since terrorists are taking advantage of their openness even in the midst of the pandemic. There are also attempts to give justification for terror and thereby dilute the resolve to fight it,” Tirumurti mentioned.
“The situation in Afghanistan is at a critical juncture with the violence by the Taliban increasing. As a close neighbour and friend of Afghanistan, this would be something where we would be playing an active role within the Council. Situations in Africa need to be focused in a more inclusive and sensitive manner, particularly in the context of peacekeeping and peace-building. Finally, efforts to bring about reform is an effort which will largely be done outside the Council, but will certainly be one of the key challenges where India will continue to play its part.”
Without naming China, USA and Russia, Tirumurti referred to fissures amongst main powers, together with throughout the Security Council. “There are concerns voiced, especially from the developing world, that the multilateral institutions do not adequately reflect the contemporary multipolar world order. The existing multilateral architecture, including the Security Council, needs to reform and adapt if it has to effectively play its role.”
