Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce has explained that he was happy with his side’s efforts in their 2-1 loss to Crystal Palace on Tuesday evening.
The Magpies fell to their 12th Premier League defeat as the Eagles overturned a one-goal deficit.
Bruce acknowledged that his side had a tough spell in the first half but was not disappointed with their efforts during the rest of the match.
Speaking to BT Sport (via BBC Sport), he said: “I was pleased with the performance, we had an awkward 15 minutes where we’ve conceded two goals from a mistake and set-piece but apart from that I couldn’t be more pleased with how we went about our work.
“We had the chances but we just dropped that little bit deep again and that cost us. I think we’ve had 20 attempts on goal and two, three, four, five in the first half when we should have been more clinical.”
He expanded further on his analysis of the game, revealing his discontent with the final score.
“(I am) frustrated and disappointed as our performance didn’t deserve for us to be beat,” he told BBC Sport.
“Our performance levels have been better certainly over the last few weeks. We have tried to implement change in the last month or so and what you’re looking for is a performance to go with it.
“As often in the Premier League, it’s definining moments. Apart from that 10-15 minute spell, we had the better chances and should have taken something from the game.”
Despite the defeat, Bruce said he wasn’t worried about the rest of the season but admitted he wanted his side the evolve.
He added: “I said about a month ago after Sheffield United, we are going to try to change.
“The players had been comfortable for a long time. We are trying to change. It’s what I want to do and I think the players are enjoying it. Performance-wise, if we keep going the way we are, we will be okay.”

Night to forget for Newcastle
A rain-soaked evening at St James’ Park ended in disappointment for the Magpies.
They came storming out of the blocks when Jonjo Shelvey netted after just two minutes.
However, Jairo Riedewald produced a thunderbolt just minutes later to level the game.
Then, Gary Cahill rose to nod home first first goal since April 2017.
Newcastle did muster a few second half efforts at goal, albeit none were problematic for the opposition.
The loss sees Bruce’s side slip to 16th in the table.
